DAVID KER SCHERMERHORN
Co-Founder of Shine A Light Theater has a passion for telling stories that make a positive impact in the world. He is a Solo Storyteller, Playwright, Screenwriter and Storytelling Teacher. Shine A Light Theater program is something he wished he had as a teenager growing up and struggling with depression. This was the catalyst for starting the program with co-founder Sharmila as well as the inspiration in writing the play "The Seatbelt", based on feelings he'd had growing up. Back then, there was not much talk about mental health or depression, let alone resources.
As a solo Storytelling Artist, (Under Michael-David Ker as his stage name) he wrote and performed the 80-minute solo play called BIRTHDAY, a storytelling show that chronicled his tough year 2017-2018, in which he lost both his parents and then his home in the Southern California wild fires. Although the play deals with some tough subjects; i.e. the death of both parents, mental health struggles, the play also incorporates humor and is about coming out of the ashes with a sense of humor and the importance of celebrating life while we're here. "Birthday" received an Encore Award at the Hollywood Fringe Festival and was invited to be performed at the Binge Fringe Theater Festival in Santa Monica, Solo Fest in LA and countless other theaters.
David is a multiple MOTH Story Slam winner and has won awards at the Ojai Storytelling Festival, Story Smash in Los Angeles and his most recent Solo Storytelling Show, "The Alligators Of Malibu", received a "Best Solo Show" nomination at the Hollywood 30-Minute Or Less Festival. He also produces and hosts his own Storytelling show called "Shame On Sunday" where Storytellers, comedians & writers such as Moses Storm, Beth Lapides, Lexi Grace & Brent Forrester share embarrassing humor based stories.
For stage, David's one-act play, “Brentwood Fever”, that he wrote & directed, was performed at The Manhattan Repertory Theater & he wrote the book to the musical, “Rock & A Hard Place”, that premiered at The Players Theater in Manhattan & was included into New York Film Academy's Musical Theatre Conservatory as part of their New Works Series.
David has been a mentor with the Writers Guilds Young Storytellers program & he started a filmmaking program in Cambodia through the NGO “Friends”, working with Underrepresented Youth to help them tell their stories on film. The film was written and directed by his students, entitled, “Life Lesson”, the film chronicles their story of living on the streets of Phnom Penh. “Life Lesson” was invited into the LA Film Festival, was acquired by the Independent Film Channel and is the project David is most proud of being involved with.
He has directed pilots for MTV, Showtime & served as Co-Creator/Executive Producer on unscripted television series (both that focused on families) for A&E & the ABC-Family Network. As a screenwriter, his one-hour drama pilot, “Wide Open” was optioned & developed by NBC-Universal Studios. He has sold scripts to Producers, Tucker Tooley (Producer on “The United States Vs. Billie Holiday” & “The Fighter”) & Vince Newman (Producer on “We're The Millers”) & co-wrote “Broken Vessels” a full-length feature film starring Todd Fields that won best film at the LA Film Festival. The film was nominated for a B.I.F.A. (British Independent Film Award) & invited into South-by-Southwest Film Festival, Raindance Film Festival & Toronto International Film Festival. His films have won prizes at Slamdance Film Festival & Portland Comedy Festival.
He is a proud father and avid surfer who will be nowhere near his computer once the waves are overhead.
